  1. It’s just my imagination, right? I can see images of the Eiffel Tower and the Mount Rushmore Memorial in this sticker. That’s in France and South Dakota.

It’s a sticker supporting the 2001 Clay County Fair in Spencer, Iowa. That was a tricky one for me. I’ve written lots about why the Fair is sometimes hard for me to handle (light bulb: maybe I should try the more positive stories sometime), but the 2001 event was most notable to me because of that business in New York on 9/11. I had spent the day in the store posting to my web site about how I refused to bow to the terrorists and all that, and went out to the fairgrounds that night to shake it off and take beautiful Fair photos.

I took the photos all right, had a meaningful conversation or two, went back to Storm Lake, much of the rest is history. Turns out my camera had a short in it, was fried, needed to be replaced immediately, things became difficult for a while.

Somewhere along the line I must have picked up this sticker and never looked at it until now. Like I say: I can see the Eiffel Tower and mount Rushmore. I’m not saying the Spencer Fair ISN’T that world class, but how did the designer pick those two places as the MOST world class?
